The gold haze of dusk settled on the ocean as I waited patiently for the perfect shot. The black-browed albatross regularly travels hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometers at a time in search of food on a wingspan of over two meters long—before it returns to its nesting grounds. Finally, one of the soaring giants filled my viewfinder and raced straight for me, slicing the sea mist in a display of perfect symmetry. I clicked the shutter and then watched it sweep silently overheard to find its nest in the steep slopes behind me. Albatross can live up to 70 years and spend their lives gliding across the ocean. I could only imagine the things it must have seen in its lifetime spent at sea.
