Taken on March 29th, one week after México had gone into Phase 2 where gatherings of more than 100 people were not allowed, only one person could be seen wearing a mask. A few days before on March 25 Dr. Abelardo Ávila, a researcher at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Health Sciences and Nutrition, warned that México would be particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic because of underlying chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. The government has been heavily criticized for downplaying the virus in its early stages. In early March the President gave an address to the nation stating amulets and prayers would protect people from COVID. So at the time this image was taken people were largely either confused or did not see the severity of the situation. As of Jan 1, 2021 the country has had over 1.4 million cases and almost 127,000 citizens lost, they are ranked number 13 in affected countries.
