Graveley said the key question in the case was whether officer Rusten Sheskey, who is white, had a reasonable belief that he or someone else was in danger when he fired the shots at Blake in the Aug. 23 shooting that left Blake, a Black man wanted on a felony warrant, paralyzed from the waist down.⠀ ⠀ In August and into September, Kenosha was wracked with sometimes violent protests after video of the shooting was posted to social media. The video shows Blake struggling with police and then attempting to get in his car as Sheskey pulls at his shirt. Sheskey is shown firing multiple shots at Blake as he appears to be reaching for something in the car. A knife was later found on the driver’s side floorboard, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the agency charged with investigating the shooting.⠀ ⠀ The city of 100,000 people declared a state of emergency on Monday night ahead of the expected announcement. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers authorized deployment of the National Guard to help preserve the peace and protect key infrastructure.
