Photo by @francescolastrucci / Like in an Escher drawing, visitors climb up and down the Toorji Ka Jhalra step well in Jodhpur, India. Rajasthan is famous for amazing royal architecture. This intricate step well was built in the early 1740s by the wife of Maharaja Abhay Singh using the famous rose red sandstone found in Jodhpur.

The step well saved the monsoon rainwater for the rest of the year and represented the wisdom and the skills of western India’s inhabitants. Many step wells survive today, despite being replaced by modern water systems. Unfortunately the Toorji Ka Jhalra was neglected, submerged, and filled with garbage for many years. It was recently restored to its former glory as part of a historical and cultural recovery project of the old city.
