I sometimes sit in the tension of do I just use this account to bring joy (which will always remain my foremost mission) or do I use it to speak up in love? Yesterday I had one of those moments. I’ve concluded that I can do both but I’ve also concluded that no matter what I post, it is likely to upset some over others. While that is not my intention, it doesn’t make me uncomfortable if what I post (or don’t post for that matter) makes some of you uncomfortable because I believe that discomfort is necessary and valuable for our personal growth. Discomfort invites us to look inward and ask ourselves “why?” Why does that not sit well with me? Why does that make me feel triggered and reactive? Why did that statement make my blood pressure rise or put me on the defensive? It also invites us to dismantle and rework some of our mindsets after that inventory has been taken. Let me encourage you- that is so healthy and a step in the personal growth direction! Watching what transpired yesterday made me feel sick and uncomfortable, for obvious reasons, but I took away something very valuable from my introspection. I asked myself, what does my leadership look like on this platform and in my everyday life? I concluded that it is so crucial to lead in love. It is so crucial to lead with character. It is so crucial to lead with integrity. To call for unity and to denounce division and a fear rhetoric, for the latter is destructive and divisive. Yesterday I learned what not to do from a man in leadership and I am so grateful for that. I also learned in the 9 years that I’ve had this account, that social media is powerful tool of influence no matter how large of a following you have. What you say or don’t say in your posts matters, but it also matters how you say it. So for this account, I am committed to communicate in the language of peace, hope, joy and love, and I promise to lead by example with character and integrity.
