Photo by @tamaramerino_photography / Window view from an underground house. Trucks, cars, and old machine scraps dot Coober Pedy´s landscape, waiting to be scavenged and used for spare parts. Coober Pedy is an unconventional town in the Australian outback where most of the population lives in underground houses called dugouts. Life takes place under the vast and lonely land itself, as most residents go after its great wealth of opal, a valuable gemstone. The town of Coober Pedy takes its name from the aboriginal term “kupa-piti,” which translates to “white man hole.” The town is located in an isolated corner of the southern Australian outback, a full 530 miles away from the nearest city.

This photo is part of my series Underland, which documents communities living underground or in cave houses around the world. Follow me on @tamaramerino_photography for more. #caves #undergroundhouse #underland
