In Issue 45 of ZOO, the Berlin Anniversary Issue, Berlin-based Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie. ‘The Nightmare’, 2007.
From his studio space next to Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, Ghenie creates art that often references the artists that have influenced him as well as nods to moments in history. Figures such as Van Gogh and Stalin appear in his work, disfigured but still recognizable, past glories and collective traumas that haunt the European imagination.
