Photo by Karine Aigner @kaigner / Before I’d ever been to Ecuador—a country with over 130 hummingbird species and extremely different environments in which they live, from cloud forests to the Amazon—I’d never really photographed hummingbirds. But Ecuador is a wonderland for these creatures, and photographing them becomes obsessive. My group and I spent three hours longer than we intended trying to photograph these incredible flyers. “Getting the shot” isn’t even half the fun. This velvet-purple coronet, along with all the others, are cheeky, pint-size bullies with enormous egos that constantly chase each other around. Watching them interact with each other and argue and flit back and forth provided endless hours of laughter and entertainment—not to mention thousands of photos to edit!
