Photograph by @cameron.davidson.photo Aerial photograph of Wrangel Island in the high Russian Arctic in mid-summer. Wrangel Island lies along the Arctic Circle and is 87 miles (140 km) north of the Chukchi Peninsula. It is the last known place that Wooly Mammoths survived. I shot this from an open door of a Soviet era MI-8 helicopter for Island Magazine in 2003. Four rangers live on the island year round and in the summer a small group of scientists live at a research station. In 1914, members of an Arctic Exhibition about the Karluk were marooned on the island for nine months. Canada, the United States, the Soviet Union and Russia have all claimed ownership of the island.
