This historic event came 100 years after White women in the U.S. gained the right to vote and 55 years after the Voting Rights Act enfranchised Black and Latina women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This year, a total of 143 women will serve in the U.S. Congress, surpassing the previous record of 127 set in 2019. This equates to about 25% of all members in Congress. Ten years ago that figure was 16.6%. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While women make up a bigger share of national and state lawmakers than ever in the U.S., the share of women in senior political positions remains disproportionately low. In 2020 for example, nine out of 50, or 18%, of governors were women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the key objectives of the @UnitedNations’ Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015 is to ensure women’s full and effective participation in decision-making in political, economic, and other forms of public life. Political representation and participation is an essential part of women’s human rights. Globally, the average number of women in parliament is 25%. There are 27 countries where representation is less than 10%.
