We remember Henry "Hank" Aaron, one of the greatest baseball players in major league history. Aaron first began playing professional baseball as a teenage shortstop in the Negro Leagues.

He joined Major League Baseball in 1952, and in 1974, he broke Babe Ruth’s record of 714 career home runs.

On his path to breaking the record and throughout his career, Aaron faced racist insults, hate mail, and death threats. He retired with 755 home runs, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002.

This 1956 photo by Osvaldo Salas is in our @smithsoniannpg's collection.
