Happy birthday to Caroline Durieux, who portrays herself here with an upraised eyebrow and shrewd, direct gaze. Best known for her satirical lithographs, Durieux spent most of her life in New Orleans and Mexico, but she attended graduate school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Durieux sent this self-portrait to Philadelphia Museum of Art curator Carl Zigrosser in 1942, writing: "Yesterday I mailed you a 'self-portrait' of the 'flower of New Orleans.' How I am ever going to live down this business of being a 'flower' god only knows."
