For the first time, the U.S. just held an oil lease sale of this land, auctioning off portions of the refuge for drilling as environmental advocates pushed back. ⁠ ⁠ No major oil companies submitted offers, and several major banks have stated that they will not fund oil projects in the Arctic, but the sale still raised more than $14 million for leases on roughly 530,000 acres (215,000 ha). The question of whether to drill for oil in this pristine landscape has been a decades-long battle, and one that is likely to continue.
