The dogs killed a mouse in the house and we held a ceremony to give her back to the land. Lea did everything; she dug the hole (with a bit of help), picked flowers, gathered stones and gently placed the mouse in the ground. She covered her with dirt and spent a long time making the grave beautiful. Then she sang a song😢 In the eulogy I said “wherever you go next, little mouse, I hope it’s beautiful” and Lea said “yes and in case you had a friend that died you will get to see them now and you will both be so happy” and I swear I shed a tear😭 Death is normal. I mean, it’s not, but it is. We talk about death all the time at home. She knows my grandmother passed and that Andrea died before she was born and, of course, that Pepper is buried in the backyard. I don’t want death to be scary or taboo and to me, the most natural way to teach her about endings is to weave them into beginnings. In nature death is so intertwined with birth, we can’t separate the two. We plant seeds and they sprout and seedlings grow tall and we harvest vegetables and eventually, the plant dies and becomes compost for the future little seedlings to grow tall and round it goes. Our little mouse friend got to return to the land. And I’m sure new little mouse babies are being born as we speak (although I’d prefer for that to happen outside of the house!)😌 It’s beautiful.
