The road runs through miles of undeveloped desert in south-central Nevada and passes the Nevada Test and Training Range, which includes the legendary Area 51. Many travelers have reported UFO sightings and other strange activity in the skies above this road. Such stories prompted the state to officially designate the route as the Extraterrestrial Highway in 1996. A few years ago I traveled from Roswell, New Mexico, to the gate of Area 51 photographing the origins of UFO mythology as part of a wider project.
