But we are also coming off the #metoomovement where people shamed victims by asking why didn’t you speak up. Speaking up for others or your self is not always easiest. I would say speaking up for my self has been a long painful lesson I have had to learn the hard way. I would suffer all because I couldn’t say no or place boundaries. I started to change when I had my daughter because I knew I wanted to break the cycle for her. Broke my heart to think about what she might have to go through if I didn’t teach her better. People that struggle with speaking up also beat them self up for allowing it but still have a hard time breaking that cycle. Here are tips I use for speaking up for the “shy speak upers” LOL 1. Once a man at a shoot told me he didn’t like a particular race I calmly asked him “O why? “ When he struggled with the answer I asked what he knew about the race and their country? I can’t say I changed his mind about his racism but he was uncomfortable having to answer and he the realized He didn’t have a real answer to that question and you see his inner dialogue thinking about what he just said. Then I went on to complement and explain what I loved about the race. 2. Don’t laugh and walk away. Women especially have been trying to laugh and inappropriate inappropriate jokes to be polite. This was something I absolutely hate it here in myself do a cringed so I found how powerful it was to stare them dead in the eye and show them that’s I’m NOT laughing! It’s not funny! This tells them quickly that they aren’t getting the reaction the want and where you stand on the subject. 3. When I find my self in a group that I feel the convo could lead down a path that I know is important to me like race or LGBT+ I nicely find a way to let the people around me know where I stand before the convo gets heated and I find it really works. I find it’s easier to have a conversation then wait till it’s uncomfortable to speak up. 4. Normalize dolls of color for children and people of colors in your daily life.
