While visiting the beautiful and fascinating country of French Guiana, I began to notice a lot of people, mostly men, walking around with small cages under their arms. I finally managed to stop one of them to take a closer look and discovered the cages held tiny songbirds. Songbird competitions are held in various parts of South America and elsewhere in the world. Birds are cared for and trained for many years to compete against other birds. They are judged by the duration of song and quality of performance in weekly or monthly competitions.
