After the retirement of the NASA Space Shuttle program, the Soyuz spacecraft, which launches on a Soyuz rocket, was the only way for Americans to make crewed space flights for several years. The Soyuz launches from the same pad at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan that cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin launched from in 1961. The Soyuz is the most frequently used launch vehicle in the world, operating almost flawlessly since the mid-1960s.
