As part of the Civilian Conservation Corps that was initiated by President Franklin Roosevelt, the CCC put thousands of young men to work across the US -- under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. Pictured above is Camp BF-1, where BF stood for Bird Refuge. They were assigned to the St. Marks Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, as it was called at the time. It was one of the few African American camps in the CCC. Between 1934 and 1942, men from this camp made the refuge possible. They strung telephone lines, cleared truck trails and did a ton of work with very few resources-- helping to set up the wildlife refuge as a beautiful place for others to enjoy for generations to come.
