Badakhshan was the only province that the Taliban did not conquer during their rule from 1996 to 2001 and thus it was one of the few provinces of the country that witnessed little insurgency in the Afghan wars – however in the last decade Taliban insurgents have managed to attack and take control of several districts in the province.
