Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.” There’s also a story tagged on the end about him falling in love with a young girl and sending her the first ever valentine. How young we talkin Valentino? Then there’s the whole idea that Valentine’s day was placed in mid Feb by Christians to cover up the pagan festival Lupercalia. Which was about fertility. Goats and dogs were sacrificed and women would be slapped by the bloody hide strips which according to men they loved cause it made them more fertile. Then they put their names in a big urn and men chose a name and would marry the lucky bloody slapped with hide gal. Each to their own! Then a bunch of poets got romantic with it all in 1375 cause it was commonly believed that birds began to mate in England and France on the 14th feb. I never normally give a shit about that many holidays apart from Halloween and Christmas but I will take them ALL in a pandemic! Cause any excuse to squeeze some joy out of my heart.
