As Keith Haring once said, '[Sculpture] has a kind of power that a painting doesn't have. You can't burn it. It would survive a nuclear blast probably. Haring's 'Totem' was executed in 1988, only two years before the artist's untimely death. In this work, erudite historical references derived from long hours spent in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art combine with allusions to pop culture and socio-political affairs, which are channeled through his distinctive graphic language.⠀
