Photo by @celestesloman / This is a virtual portrait of Kelsey Ellis, who lost her 29-year-old twin sister, Audrey, to what are presumed to have been COVID-19-related complications, on March 22, 2020, after three days in the ICU. I documented six families that lost relatives to the pandemic. Writer Katie Sanders explores what it means to say goodbye from a distance, whether that is a hazmat suit, via Zoom, or through text message. Travel restrictions made taking these portraits in person too risky, so I created still-life virtual portraits from my studio in Brooklyn.
