Photos by @florianschulzvisuals / Baby seal pups cannot withstand long periods of time in the freezing water and wait for their mothers on the ice, next to the breathing holes. When a snowdrift forms, it allows seal pups to hide in their lairs, hidden from polar bears and protected from the worst cold.

Ringed seals have the unique ability to keep their breathing hole open by scratching away the ice—even in winter's peak, when the sea ice is more than two feet (half a meter) thick.
