Made during the Early Quimbaya period in Colombia (500 BC – AD 700), this is a ‘poporo’, or lime flask, used to hold small amounts of lime produced from burnt and crushed sea-shells.
It is crafted from tumbaga – an alloy of gold and copper – and Early Quimbaya goldsmiths were skilled at producing spectacular hollow objects like this one ✨
The figure is seated on a ritual stool indicative of her high status, and her eyes are half closed as if to signal a contemplative state of mind.
