In the Arctic however, dogs are much more than that – they can be guardians, means of transport, ceremonial sacrifices, hunting companions and in some places even providers of fur for clothing. Archaeological excavations show a canine presence in the Arctic for at least 17,000 years. As early as 9,000 years ago, Arctic ancestors living in northern Siberia made sleds that could be pulled by dogs.
