Photos by @brentstirton / Yesterday, February 20, was World Pangolin Day. Tragically, this unique animal remains the world’s most trafficked mammal. The demand for pangolins is overwhelmingly from China and Vietnam, where pangolin scales are used in traditional medicine and pangolin flesh is considered an exclusive delicacy. In Vietnam and China, pangolins are illegally offered at restaurants catering to wealthy patrons who want to eat rare and endangered wildlife. There is no evidence to support claims of medicinal properties in pangolin scales, or any other part of the pangolin. Chinese researchers have established that pangolins carry viruses that are closely related to the COVID-2019 virus. Organizations like @tikkihywoodfoundation and @savingvietnamswildlife have been instrumental in rescuing pangolins from the trade. @conservation @endangeredspecies @pangolinssg @eiaenvironment
