Was 1976 the best best-picture race at the Oscars... ever? It was, after all, the year One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest beat out Jaws, Nashville, Barry Lyndon, and Dog Day Afternoon. And Michael Douglas, only 31 at the time and still a few years away from becoming a movie star, launched his producing career on Cuckoo’s Nest after his father, Kirk, gave up on turning the Ken Kesey novel into a film. “I didn’t think we had a shot to win against those other films,” Douglas tells V.F., 45 years later (he would, of course, go on to win the Oscar).
