Photo by @joshuacogan / On the way to the temple at Mount Agung in Bali, we passed these farmers harvesting marigolds in preparation for the Galungan festival. Known locally as "gemitir," these flowers are among the many auspicious blooms here, as the color yellow is associated with divinity. The relationship between plant and spirit on the island is as rich as it is layered, driven by a mixture of culture and ecology weaving together over millennia. I often found myself following flowers from one place to another as I spent days photographing and wandering. I found flowers often led to ceremonies or encounters with people and places I would not have otherwise encountered.
