Photo by @celestesloman / This is a virtual portrait of Todd Bailey and his mother, Joyce Bailey. Todd lost his aunt, his mother's youngest sister, Kathy (in framed picture), on July 6. His mother was also in the ICU battling COVID in a hospital a few miles down the road. After suffering a stroke and spending a few weeks in rehab, Joyce recovered.

I documented six families that lost relatives to the pandemic. Writer Katie Sanders explores what it means to say goodbye from a distance, whether that is a hazmat suit, via Zoom, or through text message. Travel restrictions made taking these portraits in person too risky, so I created still-life virtual portraits from my studio in Brooklyn.
