As many of you will know I decided to take a break from competing & full training for personal reasons last October, for the first time in my career so far. After getting a coach at 13, these last 6 months have been the first time off running in my life (other than my 2 week end of season breaks or forced injury / illness breaks). I have still been doing a few easy short runs a week & over the last month or so I have done the odd "session",but nothing like my full training schedule. It has been nice to have a break but I am starting to miss proper training & racing. It has always been my plan to come back to competing! Yes I'm 29 years old, but many athletes don't peak until their late 20s to mid 30s these days. One of my heroes, Kelly Holmes was 34 when she won the Olympic 800m & 1500m doubles at the 2004 Olympics! What I have really been focusing on especially over the last 6 months is coaching our running squad. Sam & I started coaching in April 2019, originally just for a friend at the gym who wanted to run faster & we put a post on FB. This soon turned into coaching competitive children and teenagers & has continued to grow rapidly since then, particularly in the last 6 months. I am very thankful to be coaching each & every 1 of our athletes,and it really is a dream job to me! Because this video is of Kiera running yesterday, special mention to her. Kiera only started training with us last October & had her first track race last November..she had been doing surf life & other sports but not athletics. She started with a 2'28 800m in Nov & a 5'11 1500m. Fast forward only 4 months & she has now run a 2'13 800m (current number 1 in NZ u18 rankings) and 4'45 1500m (currently 6th in NZ)with more races to come this season! We decided to do a 400m TT in training yesterday as she hasn't run 1 fresh before (only straight after an 800m)& wow she ran amazing, as you can see- she almost beat me haha. She is very dedicated & so deserves her success- what an exciting future ahead! So excited to continue to see all of our athletes chase their dreams! #teampetty」3月18日 7時06分
