⏯ Le Salon carré accueillait au 18e siècle les œuvres des artistes de l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, d’où le nom « Salon » donné à ces expositions. C’est ici, ainsi que dans la Grande Galerie, qu’est inauguré en 1793 le musée du Louvre, alors nommé « Muséum central des Arts ». Le Salon carré reçoit son décor sculpté au milieu du 19e siècle et est aujourd’hui l’écrin des primitifs italiens.

⏯ In the 18th century, the Salon Carré became home to the exhibitions organised by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which explains the use of the term ‘Salon’ to refer to these events. It was here and in the Grande Galerie that the Musée du Louvre was inaugurated in 1793, at the time called the ‘Muséum Central des Arts’. The Salon Carré’s sculpted decoration was created in the mid-19th century, and today, the Italian Primitives are showcased here.
