From @nowthisearth: Scientists have discovered nanoplastics at both of the Earth’s poles, adding more evidence that plastic is ubiquitous around the globe. Nanoplastics are even smaller and reportedly more toxic than microplastics, which have already been discovered in the most far-flung places on the planet, such as the peak of Mt. Everest. Scientists don’t yet know the effect that these plastics are having on human health.

Approx 45-feet-deep ice cores containing 50 years of snow from Greenland near the North Pole show 13 nanograms of nanoplastics per milliliter of melted ice. The researchers found four times more nanoplastic in the Antarctic ice, which is likely due to the way sea ice is created. The nanoparticles are thought to have been blown to Greenland by the wind, and taken to Antarctica by ocean currents. In both places, half of the nanoplastics came from polyethylene (PE), which is typically used in single-use plastic bags, etc. In Greenland, a quarter of the particles were tire dust, likely from cars driven in North America and Asia, and blown upwards.
