🖖 April 5, #FirstContactDay, celebrates Star Trek’s first meeting between humans and Vulcans.
Oct. 20, 2020, we made a first contact of our own, as @nasasolarsystem's #OSIRISREx spacecraft touched asteroid Bennu for 6 seconds, collecting rocks and soil. The maneuver, known as a Touch And Go, or TAG, used a nitrogen gas bottle fired to stir up Bennu’s soil, allowing the spacecraft to capture its sample. OSIRIS-REx is currently flying back to deliver the sample to Earth, where researchers will examine Bennu’s origins, hoping to better understand what makes an asteroid live long and prosper.
