"My dad still speaks the Otomi language and I'm learning. One of my favorite things is that the word for 'skin' is the same as the word for the outer layer of the Earth. So the message there is that if you hurt Mother Earth, you're actually hurting yourself."

Climate justice activist Xiye Bastida (@xiyebeara) witnessed firsthand the injustices of climate change in her small town of San Pedro Tultepec in Mexico. When she moved to New York for school, she started to organize.

Today on #EarthDay, Bastida shares her story as an activist and how her experience has shaped her perspective on Thomas Cole’s iconic landscape painting in The Met collection “The Oxbow."
