🌸 story 2
I had lost my entire family by the time when I was 28. They left one by one.
When the Japanese earthquake and tsunami happened on March 11 2011, I was in NY. Seeing such astonishing numbers of people have washed away, my personal history of loss came back with my deep emotion.
Then I heard the news that cherry trees were blooming among the debris. That news inspired me. It saved me. The strength of nature. Rebirth themselves.
I started painting the petals one by one, like a monk was counting prayer beads. The repetitive motion was very important for my healing process. I started to see each petal as each life who had to leave the loved ones behind. I felt like I was communicating with them, and mourning my own grieves.
I used my mother’s old ink stick, which I found in her calligraphy box. (3rd photo) The gradation of gray wasn't a background. After I painted the petals, I gently wrapped around each petal as each life. I wanted to hug them with the gray ink, not black, like warm tears.
