My buds @stephenwintersir and @darealpoeticjustice and i went to my Nola neighbor @rickieleejones_ ‘s first show at @birdlandjazz (2 more left on Sat-Go!). WE WERE SILENT-SCREAMING AND QUIET-CRYING WITH JOY. Rickie got me thru college in Chicago. Last time i saw her in concert was 40 years ago at the venerable @aragonballroom - a week after an incred #TomWaits #FranksWildYears concert there. She was brilliant then. But last Thursday night was a fucking revelation and Rickie - with a new raspier fine wine timbre reached into a bowlful of jazz standards and ripped the entrails out of each and every one of their perfectly polished dumpling skins w the help of an incredible band of veteran nyc sidemen. Sunny side of the street, spring can really hang you up the most, the second time around, nature boy, september song. Rickie, already an icon, sidles into the lineup of the greatest jazz vocalists of them all: Billie, Ella, Sarah, Anita (O’Day), Carmen, Abbie, Jimmy (Scott) and now Rickie (and ofc my other Nola favorite @therealjohnboutte) See her while u can and hear her album featuring these songs and more. And to think, now we’re friends.
