How very brave of you all! I’m continuing to read each and every one and want you all to know that I see and hear you. I believe that the more people who open up helps others to do so as well. And this is what we need, more dialogue. More listening. A few things I’d like to mention… When I volunteered on the suicide hotline we were taught in training not to say that someone has “committed suicide”. Because the act of committing implies a crime and suicide is not a criminal act. It is a person looking to put an end to their suffering. Instead we say “died by suicide”. Another thing I learned working in social work, as well as on the hotline and from my own personal experiences is this: When we know someone who is struggling it is best to refrain from advice. Listen. Meet them where they are. On the hotline they would say “meet them in the dark basement”. In other words, sit with them in their pain and just offer support. Listening = support. Validation = support. This is the age of information. If you know someone who is struggling the best way to help them is to educate yourself and listen without advice, judgment or trying to “fix it” for them. For me personally, I have been on both sides. I’ve offered help and I’ve been the one who needed help. When I was the one who needed help I was told that I was “throwing myself a pity party”. I was told to “pray”. I was told that things “will get better”. I was called “crazy”. Does any of that sound helpful? Be careful of the words you choose. Be mindful and gather info before you go forming opinions from a one sided lens. We can’t always help those who suffer but we can be kind. We can listen. And we can be present. A continuation of yesterday’s post:

I want to thank you all for being so vulnerable and openly sharing your struggles and experiences for others to read.
How very brave of you all!

I’m continuing to read each and every one and want you all to know that I see and hear you.
I believe that the more people who open up helps others to do so as well. And this is what we need, more dialogue. More listening.

A few things I’d like to mention…
When I volunteered on the suicide hotline we were taught in training not to say that someone has “committed suicide”. Because the act of committing implies a crime and suicide is not a criminal act. It is a person looking to put an end to their suffering. Instead we say “died by suicide”.
Another thing I learned working in social work, as well as on the hotline and from my own personal experiences is this:

Listening = support.
Validation = support.
This is the age of information.

Let’s keep the dialogue going.
Do it for those we’ve lost.
