Over decades of working throughout the Muslim world, including in the United States, I’ve captured scenes during the holy month that reflect both religious activities and daily life. For a non-Muslim, it’s been an interesting challenge working in countries that observe the holiday; often in very hot climates, it can be tricky to find places to eat or drink—even water. I’ve always tried to make sure I’m extra polite and culturally sensitive so I could perform my work but not add stress to people I’m either working with or photographing who may be coping with dehydration and hunger.
