The most efficient way to swim with dolphins (and actually keep up) that I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world besides Papua New Guinea: getting dragged on a rope ladder on the side of a boat!!!
When the dolphins suddenly started jumping ahead, my instinct was to throw on the mask and fins and dive off the boat to try to free-dive with them for as long as I could keep up. But I was told to go on the rope ladder contraption instead…
Being the stubborn person I am, I dove in anyway, and per usual, could not swim anywhere near as fast as the dolphins. So I tried their rope ladder option even though it looked questionable 😂
Basically you lay on top of it and just put your face in the water with the mask and snorkel. Then the boat slowly goes forward, which causes a little draft underwater at the bow, which dolphins apparently love to surf in!
So you get to swim with them up close for quite a while! It’s really incredible! And also a great option if you can’t swim or aren’t an Olympic gold swimmer who can keep up with a dolphin!
We’ll definitely be doing this on the 2024 Papua New Guinea group trip! Who wants to do it?
Also some ppl asked if it hurt: it wasn’t the most comfortable thing, but neither is trying to hold your breath to free dive with dolphins! I’d definitely do it again and again!
