スミソニアン国立動物園のインスタグラム(smithsonianzoo) - 4月19日 00時15分
At the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, we believe conservation efforts cannot and should not exist in a vacuum. That's why Smithsonian scientists work closely with local communities, to ensure everyone is involved in conservation solutions.
In the Maasai Mara of Kenya, researchers work closely with the Maa Trust, a foundation that supports economic opportunities linked to conservation work. In this photo, a Maasai woman is beading as part of the Maa Beadwork social enterprise, which provides sustainable alternative livelihoods for families. Beading is not only a form of income for Maasai women, but it is a tribal art with cultural significance. Through Maa Beadwork, women are able to sell beadwork products to tourists who engage with nature conservancies, thus strengthening local support for wildlife conservation. The Maa Trust has a number of environmentally friendly sustainable livelihood programs. Use the link in our bio to learn more about @themaatrust
