Having a lower income can determine where people live, which can increase exposure to air pollution – in turn, exacerbating breathing issues. And these issues start early. Our Research Initiative for Self-Care Equity is uncovering many socioeconomic factors that affect breathing problems in children, which can cause missed days in school and problems later in life.

But for every layer we uncover, there is an opportunity for us to create more positive health outcomes. Armed with this knowledge, our scientists can look for new solutions to meet these specific needs, and that includes everyday access to things like quality nutrition and safe working conditions.
