Video by @andrea_frazzetta | In Africa’s Rift Valley, the Danakil Depression is a land made of salt and lava. A kind of ghost ocean, it’s what remains from an inland sea that evaporated 20,000 years ago, leaving a desert of salt. This vast plain is the homeland of the Afar people, who have adapted to survive in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. They’ve managed to keep a strong identity despite a nomadic lifestyle. Their economy, based on extracting salt and other minerals, remains precarious as they struggle with a hostile climate. Follow @andrea_frazzetta for more images and stories.
