In an isolated town in the Peruvian Andes named Santo Tomás, there are only three police officers. The nearest court is a gruelling 12-hour drive away, and few people have the time or money to dedicate to court dates. To fix all of this, between the 24th and 26th December, Chumbivilcanos settle their agreements with public fist fights.

Social status is suspended on these days: the boss fights the employee, the waiter the merchant, the sisters each other. People of every age – from small children to old people – and gender can participate. It's all part of what the locals called Takanakuy. Which, in the Quechuan language, means "to hit" (Takar) "reciprocally” (Nakuy).

Unlike a court trial however, there is no clear winner. Instead, everyone is free to interpret the fight the way they want to. Victory, catharsis or just plain old revenge. Plus, there's also the fact that each fight begins and ends with a hug, which goes some way to maintaining balance before and after the brawl. Keep reading at the link in bio.
