Despite his many successes, @The Weeknd admits his trajectory seems pretty unlikely: “I thought ‘Blinding Lights’ was gonna be a flop.”

Now, he occupies a slippery place among his mononym-level peers. Tesfaye has been very famous for more than half his career and hasn’t sought to propose a notion of what his fame means. All of the public personality, really, is in the songs. “It’s adult music,” he says. “It’s R-rated music. I’m not responsible for how someone feels about my music.”
