Imagine the Westminster Dog Show 500 years after a nuclear event. You might picture something close to this work by New York City-based photographer @charlieengman.
“Haven’t you ever felt deeply in love with and deeply afraid of something at the same time?" he says. "It’s a powerful feeling!” For Engman, AI is a tool to create images that feel simultaneously cliche and unfamiliar: “AI images are still in that uncanny valley where they feel equally wrong and equally right.”
The images you see, all generated by AI, are “rooted in preexisting visual culture, but are not otherwise bound by human logic, cultural codes, or even physical reality.” In this set, Engman looks at competition, exploring the intimacy that develops around the things we cherish.
