Last year, Schuch received the German Film Award for his intense portrayal of Thomas Brasch, in Andreas Kleinert’s Dear Thomas. He got the same prize on three other occasions: for Best Supporting Actor (just recently, with All Quiet on the Western Front where he played a soldier in WW1) and in 2002 for his role as a psychotic drug dealer in Berlin Alexanderplatz. That year he had a double and was awarded Best Actor too for System Crasher, where he played a caretaker of a nine-year-old girl. These four roles mark the wide range of Schuch’s talent, to go to physical and mental extremes – and to move the audience with vulnerability and wit. During his interview with ZOO Magazine, Schuch dived deep into his past and current creative choices. Exploring his inspirations and dwellings he also eloquently states, “I’m happy that I have to and am allowed to keep exercising this muscle of questioning my prejudices”. Grappling with history, and the reflection of historical events in art, Schuch constantly challenges his vision and the way he thinks. We are happy to have him in a Zoom meeting, committed and open for discussion, but relaxed as well. It seems like, for now, he enjoys staying where he’s at.
