神社に置かれている狛犬には邪気を祓い、神様を護る存在とされています。
口を閉じている吽形は万物の終わりを表します。
狛犬の身体には一から万までの漢数字を書いています。
これは「ひふみ祝詞」という神様にお願いする際に使う言葉から引用しています。
ひふみ祝詞には様々な解釈がありますが、万物の広がりや理を表し、魔除けの効果があるとされています。
万物の終わりを司る存在を表現した作品です。
阿形と合わせて始まりから終わりの全てを守り神を表現しました。

Komainu (guardian dogs) are placed at shrines to ward off evil spirits and protect the gods.
The closed-mouth un-gyo represents the end of all things.
On the body of the komainu are written Chinese numbers from one to ten thousand.
These numbers are taken from the "Hifumi Norito," a phrase used to make requests to the gods.
There are various interpretations of the Hifumi Norito, but it is believed to represent the expanse and reason of all things and to ward off evil.
This work expresses the presence that governs the end of all things.
Together with the a-gyo, it expresses a god who protects everything from the beginning to the end.
