Since 2018 non-profit @larubeyasurfing collective (which translates to “on the beach” in the Indigenous Caribbean Garifuna tongue) has committed itself to empowering Black and other POC youth in Far Rockaway to engage with the water they’ve grown up with through surfing – particularly as gentrification begins to ravage the beachfront neighbourhood.
