Photos by @beckythale | As a Washington, D.C., resident, I’ve been to the Smithsonian museums many times. But a National Geographic assignment gave me access to places few ever see. Our behind-the-scenes story captured what’s kept in the storerooms, cabinets, and crates. Often these items may rotate into a display case, but the Smithsonian collection is so vast that just one percent is on view at any given time.

Seeing this cabinet full of Muppets definitely made my day. In other photos: Paintings at the Luce Foundation Center at the American Art Museum are accessible to researchers; beetles in the entomology collection; the Gremlin and the Muppets are stored in the basement of the American History Museum.
